Birth Essentials Check-List

(2 minutes reading time)

Here we are! Not long until the baby is gonna join us. But are you sure you got all that you need? Here's a handy list of essentials to get now, so you can avoid overspending on things you won't need right away(or can easily buy later)

Correct, you don't need to buy everything at once, but having the essentials ready for when you bring your baby home is a great way to feel prepared and reduce stress. The hospital won't let you leave by car without an appropriate car seat, so that's a non-negotiable!

Here is a list of the first things to buy, broken down into key categories:

1. Travel Essentials

  • Car Seat: This is a top priority. A rear-facing infant car seat is essential for bringing your baby home safely from the hospital. Make sure you practice fitting it correctly in your car before the birth.

  • Pram or Travel System: You'll need a way to transport your baby. A pushchair, pram, or a travel system (which includes a car seat) with a lie-flat option is crucial for newborns to support their developing spines.

  • Changing Bag: A dedicated bag for carrying nappies, wipes, and other essentials when you're out and about.

2. Sleeping

  • Cot, Moses Basket, or Crib: A safe place for your baby to sleep. For the first six months, a crib or Moses basket is perfect for having your baby sleep in the same room as you.

  • New Mattress: This is a crucial safety item. If you are using a second-hand cot, you must buy a brand new, firm, and waterproof mattress that fits snugly with no gaps.

  • Fitted Sheets: Stock up on several fitted sheets, as you'll be changing them often.

  • Baby Sleeping Bags or Cellular Blankets: Duvets and pillows are not safe for babies under 12 months. Opt for baby sleeping bags or cellular blankets that can be tucked in securely.

3. Nappy Changing

  • Nappies: Whether you choose disposable or reusable, you'll need a good supply of newborn-sized nappies.

  • Wipes or Cotton Wool: To clean your baby's delicate skin. Cotton wool and water are often recommended for the first few weeks.

  • Changing Mat: A wipe-clean changing mat is essential for hygiene and comfort.

  • Nappy Cream: A barrier cream can help prevent nappy rash.

4. Clothing

  • Vests/Bodysuits: These are the base layer of a baby's outfit and you'll need plenty. Look for ones with poppers for easy nappy changes.

  • Sleepsuits/Babygrows: Comfortable all-in-one outfits for day and night. Zips or poppers down the middle are often the easiest for dressing.

  • Cardigans or Jackets: For layering to keep your baby warm.

  • Hats, Mittens, and Socks: These are important for regulating a newborn's temperature.

5. Feeding

  • If breastfeeding:

    • Nursing bras

    • Breast pads

    • Nipple cream

    • Muslin squares (for spills and burping)

  • If bottle-feeding:

    • Bottles and teats

    • Sterilising equipment (steam, microwave, or cold water steriliser)

    • Bottle brush for cleaning

    • Formula milk powder (if not breastfeeding)

    • Muslin squares

Remember, you don't need a huge number of each item. Babies grow incredibly fast, and you can always buy more as you go. Many people also find that they receive a lot of clothes and essentials as gifts. The most important thing is to have the basics covered so you're ready for your baby's arrival.
